Stories from the Olympics

The Olympics are over. I wasn’t able to watch as much of it as I would have liked, although I was able to watch some. The Olympics give me the opportunity to watch those obscure sports that are just impossible to find anywhere else. Like handball. I love watching handball. Rugby, though, is my favorite, and I was excited beyond reason when rugby sevens made its Olympic debut this year. Fast paced and magnificent, sevens…

Scout Camp and the Telling of Stories

I had the valuable opportunity to attend scout camp last weekend with the two 11-year-old scouts in my troupe. We got there early Friday morning (like 8:30, soooooo early), set up camp, and then the scouts got to learn all the things from proper flag etiquette to first aid, to carving and to capture the flag. Yes, capture the flag. Whenever there was at least a half our of free time, that’s all the boys…

Inspiration: Where Do You Find It?

People say their best inspiration comes while in the shower or sitting on the toilet (I know, TMI). For me, that’s a load of crap (sorry about all these toilet references). I don’t find those places to be very inspiring at all. So where does inspiration come from? I think the answer to that is “anywhere.” Sure, you could find it in the bathroom, if that’s your thing (and if it is, bless your soul).…

Update on Writing and Life

Wow. I was so busy last week I didn’t even realize I hadn’t yet updated my blog! Anyway, here’s a little update as to what’s going on with my writing and life.   Dwarf Mountain I am still querying agents about Dwarf Mountain. I have currently been rejected by nine agents, am waiting on two more responses, one of which seems to have forgotten all about me. So yes, things are moving quite swimmingly on…

Why You Should Respect Pokemon Go

When Pokemon Go was released a few weeks ago, I was giddy with excitement. I’ve been playing Pokemon since I was 12, back when it was a new thing in North America. So when the mobile app came out, I was gung-ho to get started catching all the Pokemon around me! You might ask why a 31-year-old would be so enthralled with the idea of running around, phone in hand, catching monsters that aren’t even real. I’ll…

Things Kentucky and the East Has that Utah Doesn’t

After spending the last week out in Kentucky and North Carolina, I found a lot of things that are just not available in Utah. Having lived in only Idaho and Utah since coming to the United States, it’s safe to say that I haven’t had much exposure to the many wonderful things this country has to offer. So without further ado, here’s what I found out East that Utah is lacking.   Humidity From the moment…

Thai Food: The Eternal Flame

I love spicy food. It’s amazing! Not only does it clear out your sinuses, but there’s just something deliciously pleasurable about making your face suffer while you eat wonderful food. It’s a juxtaposition that most people probably don’t see enjoyable. I used to, until my wife took me to a Thai restaurant last night for an early birthday dinner. I’m still recovering. I love Thai food. Everything about it is amazing. The flavors, the spice, the…

Adventure at the Discount Motel

My wife loves to find deals on just about everything. And it’s awesome. But sometimes, those deals are almost more trouble than they’re worth. This past weekend we had the privilege of attending a wedding reception on Friday night, and then a wedding followed by a luncheon followed by another reception on Saturday. Since both these weddings took place about 2 hours north of us, it was only reasonable to get a hotel up in that…

I Have a 1 Year Old

My little guy turned one this weekend! For some reason, it’s a huge relief. It’s not that I didn’t think we could, it’s just that I never thought it would actually happen. I mean, he’s always been a tiny, helpless baby, and how could he possibly get any older? It’s impossible! And yet, here he is, turning a year old. I’d say I’m stoked that I kept him alive for an entire year, but that was…
